Two Zhejiang activists sentenced to three years in prison for remembering Lu Xiaobo

A Hangzhou court sentenced Zou Wei and Zan Aizong for meeting on the Qiantang River on 13 July 2024, the seventh anniversary of Liu’s death, to commemorate the intellectual, one of the promoters of Charter 08, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his nonviolent commitment to human rights. Despite his death, he continues to inspire fear among China’s rulers today.

Jimmy Lai gets 20 years, but for Father Mella, Hong Kongers are with him

The China Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) group also reacted to the verdict, calling for the release of the 78-year-old Catholic leader and editor of Apple Daily, imprisoned under Hong Kong’s infamous national security legislation.

“Given his age and the length of the sentence, Lai is at heightened risk of dying in prison,” reads a report by the group. “Jimmy Lai has committed no crime and should be released immediately,” said Angeli Datt, CHRD’s research and advocacy coordinator.

Hong Kong Publisher Jimmy Lai Gets 20 Years

A 20-year prison sentence typically means actual imprisonment of at least 13 years and 4 months, assuming maximum remission. The sentence is thus plainly calculated to keep Lai behind bars for the rest of his life. It was assailed by human rights organizations across the globe, with Amnesty International labeling it a “grim milestone” and a “cold-blooded attack on freedom of expression.” The organization officially designated Lai, who is in ill health, a prisoner of conscience. Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders, The Committee to Protect Journalists, Chinese Human Rights Defenders and the International Press Institute, among others, all issued statements condemning the sentence, requesting that the UK and US governments intervene on humanitarian grounds.

Several international advocacy groups, including Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders, condemned the sentence. Angeli Datt, the research and advocacy coordinator of Chinese Human Rights Defenders, expressed concern that Mr. Lai’s health issues would not be treated. “Beijing has shown its willingness to let defenders die in detention, an extreme tactic to try to silence their peaceful advocacy for human rights,” she said.

China overturns Canadian man’s death sentence

Angeli Datt, research and advocacy coordinator at Chinese Human Rights Defenders, said that human rights experts have long suspected that Schellenberg’s death sentence was the result of geopolitical tensions between China and Canada.

“It’s hard to ignore the timing of Carney’s recent visit and this development on his case,” she said. “A retrial is a chance to grant him a fair trial.”

Hong Kong authorities criticized for prosecuting Tiananmen crackdown commemorators

Organizing a candlelight vigil to call for justice for victims of a massacre and democracy in China is not a threat to national security – it is a form of expression and assembly guaranteed by international human rights law. This trial is a sham, designed to make repression appear legitimate. If Hong Kong authorities actually follow the law, their only recourse is to drop all charges and immediately release the three organizers.
